Front gardens 3, Esbjerg, Denmark 2012

Okay, this is what happened. I went for a walk in Esbjerg North with my camera, wondering how I might make something fun and hopefully interesting out of the elaborate front gardens of this area. After a few test shots I found myself moving in closer – as often happens.

What I found when I did that surprised me. The gardens were beautiful!

Front gardens 1, Esbjerg, Denmark 2012

Let me introduce this new series: While I live in Copenhagen, the capital of Denmark, my mother-in-law lives in Esbjerg, a mere 3 hour drive away. But it is a drive straight across the country and more things than you’d think are different.

One of the differences is the love of front gardens in my MIL’s neighbourhood. I have to admit that Peter and I usually get a laugh out of looking at them, and during our Christmas break I decided to photograph these frontgardens. The result might surprise you as it did me.

Congratulations! Your work has been chosen…

I live with a paradox. I enter any competative situation with the expectation to win and I suffer from severe disappointment when I don’t. This being the case, it can seem a little harsh to have made the decision to submit to at least two fine art competitions a month. But the constant submission deadlines keeps me on my toes, keeps me working and developing my style. The bodies of the work are the ones presented in my portfolio rather than in this photo blog though some photos make it into both.

Expecting another ‘we’re sorry but thanking you for contributing’ it took a while for my sleep drugged brain to take in the following mail this morning:

“Congratulations! Your work has been chosen for the juried exhibition SELF PORTRAIT at PhotoPlace Gallery in Middlebury, Vermont.  Juror Caleb Cole selected forty photographs for the exhibition, from nearly 700 photographs submitted. In addition to being in the gallery exhibition, your work will also be available for viewing on the PhotoPlace Gallery website.

The exhibition will be on view at the gallery from May 21st to June 15th.   An artist’s reception will be held on June 14th from 5-7 pm, as part of the Town of Middlebury monthly Arts Walk.”

What?? I made it to my first international group exhibition? Yes! Then I began to laugh – because why am I surprised if I enter to win? 🙂

This is the photo that got accepted –  a encouraging first but hopefully not the last….
