We didn’t make inside St. Peter’s Basilica during this visit. The lines were much too long. We did make inside the Vatican Museum on their once a months free entry day. This photo is from the garden where we collapsed after moving through the museum without room to even scratch your nose.

Did you know the pope once resided in Avignon? I didn’t when I came across the papal residence there. Admittedly it was a while ago, 1309 t0 1377.

This piece of tumbled marble was close to the grave of Julius Cesar. The kids were too tired, though, for us to spend much time looking for it.

These tress were probably not on the Palatine Hill when Emperor Augustus and Livia lived there, removed from the stifling heat of the forum itself. But surely there were some like them at that time.

Titus Arch on Forum Romanum.
I’ve been to the Forum twice but never in the summer. It would be a nightmare, nestled as it is in a hollow without shade.

Forum Romanum – my first meeting with history was seeing the cartoon “Asterix and Cleopatra” at age 8. The fascination has stayed with me ever since.
