Cars 2

It’s a good thing I took enough images I consider worth while showing this summer. Because it’s blowing like crazy outside these days, freezing and there’s is no light. As far as I can recall I saw the sun through the clouds briefly four days ago. In thory a photographer can always find something to photograph but I’m finding it real hard this days…

At least I can recall summer, rhubarb icecream and vacation by working with images from a warmer season.

Cars 1

Don’t think I’m done with images from The Bay Area 🙂 But before I continue I want to take you on a trip in time and destination to look at cars.

My first model hangs out at Amager Beach by my favorite ice cream place. Not quite the drop dead looks you’ll see later but lots of personality.

Marin County Fair 3, SF 2013

One of my fondest memories from the fair was asking directions from two police officers. We were getting a bit tired from walking back and forth through the fair ground in the heat and wanted to make sure we were heading the right way to hear Weird Al Yankovic.

I remember Weird Al from my year at college in the early 80’ies with classic spoofs like ‘Girls just wanna have lunch, ‘Like a surgeon’ and ‘Fat’. A later favorite is ‘Armish paradise’. For some reason my son had taken a liking to him even without knowing the original versions of the songs. And here was a chance to see him live!

We got talking to the officers and what amazed them above anything else was that a family from Denmark would know about Weird Al. We all parted on a very happy note.

A small detour to Amagerbrogade 132 – back in time

Remember the derelict building I photographed? Well, I was given this photo from its prime. The best thing is we actually see what went on back then. I’ll do you a favour and translate for those not Danish 🙂

If we start at the left there was a dairy, Mejeri (this is before refrigerators so you had to get milk daily). Next a shop selling coffee, Kaffemagasinet Holland, a fish dealer, Fiskehuset, a butcher is on the corner (the signs advertise the selling of meat and if you have seen my pictures you may recall there were still parts of the old letters left). As far as I can make out the first shop around the corner is a leather store, ‘Sundby Læderhandel’. Next to it I see the letters ‘NI’. On this website it’s clear to see that sign says ‘Nilo’. The letters were still there when I was photographing but I don’t seem to have captured them. I’m afraid I don’t know what kind of brand Nilo was.

Above the entrance to the butcher there’s a sign saying ‘Pension’ so apparently you could rent a room above the shops – with a toilet in the back yard and no bathing facilities. Those were the good old days 🙂 The Danish website I referred to above states that by 1943 the pension was no longer there. The last sign on the front says ‘Ladestation’. It translates to charging station. I figure it would be an activity going on in the back yard but I’m not sure what they were charging.

The new restaurant in the new building is opening. It’s too dark here in Denmark during the winter for the kind of way I photograph. I also like just a bit of soul to what I work with and that can be hard to find with everything being brand new. But the owners has promised me I can have access in the spring and continue the project.

Point Reyes Station 1, SF 2013

Karin Ott

Point Reyes Station is a tiny town on the way to Point Reyes – a vast natural area leading out to the Pacific. Personally my family find the actual Point Reyes boring. You drive for over an hour and see only cattle and flat landscape. Finally you reach the sea shore – and then you turn around and drive all the way back. We do like Point Reyes Station a lot, though, and try to go there once a year for lunch.

The main street seems like a time portal going far back. The image above is from the oldest garage in te US. Not all the houses are pretty but many of them have a lot of character and I think a fine balance has been found between being a sort of touristy stop and old time USA.
