What caught my photo interest this visit to Muir Woods was where nature met man. Along the paths roots were exposed and worn by thousands of feet and were still part of a living tree.

Another detail from the giant redwoods… Notice the burn. The tree have a natural fire inhibitant in their trunks. They need the surrounding growth to burn down regularly so they can have space to breathe and grow.

Trying to photograph Giant Redwoods is almost impossible because, well, they’re giant… So I took my usual approach and went for details.

Muir Woods is very close to San Francisco, just north over the Golden Gate Bridge. It is a small area of Giant redwoods, one of the few within easy reach of a tourist attraction so a lot of people pass through.

I think this image has the potential to be one of my favorite shots of the whole trip though of course it’s hard to say when we’re still at it.
Taking an evening walk at sunset by Mount Shasta I noticed two kinds of people. There were most of what I termed ‘yoga people’ but there were also two photographers – easily distinguished from the yoga people by the lack of dreadlocks and the use of shoes and vests 🙂 I noticed what they were shooting and quickly followed their lead before the light was gone with this result.

There is lots to do and see (other than a great iron bridge) at a leisurely pace in Petaluma. One of our really fun experiences last year was deciding to take a tour of the Lagunitas Brewery.
I’ve done plenty of tours of Carlsberg in my time. A guide takes you around the facilities, you go through the museum and eventually you get to taste one beer for free. Well, this was California… At the appointed time the very large group of people waiting for the tour was packed into the bar (looking like some fraternity house). It took a while as they had to check all the ID’s. Then the guide told us the tasters would be coming up and once he was done handing out samples and telling stories, those who really wanted to were welcome to take a tour of the grounds.
Wonderfully entertaining with me driving from there as Peter got my samples too. Touring the grounds? Nah, why should we? We got what we came for and more so as the guide was a born entertainer. Highly recommended!
