When we had one of the rare snow falls of winter I decided to play with my Holga lens. Holga lenses are made of plastic which gives them a very significant vignette and softness. You can’t crop, have to guess at focus and do very little post work. I love the amount of personality you can get for $25 on eBay.

The last image taken with a Holga lens this time around… I love the clean, crisp images of the DSLR but there’s a poetry in these kinds of images I want to explore further. I only wish it wasn’t so expensive to get film developed in Denmark. I would love to work with film cameras too.

Back at the ice cream van – but this time with my new friend Holga. She may come cheap but she sure has a lot of personality.
Holga is a camera brand originating in Hong Kong with the purpose of bringing affordable photography to the Chinese. The cameras are made all of plastic and in time the special look you get from wobbly plastic and light leaks have created its own following.
I do have a real Holga camera. I even have some films waiting in the fridge. But as I haven’t yet figured a way to be able to afford to have them developed and scanned, my new friend is a Holga lens, fitted for my DSLR Nikon.
What on Earth, you may well ask, is the point of taking out of focus images with light leaks with a DSLR? To me, the point is that it’s fun to play. This next blog-series is about the Holga lens and the special look it creates.
My new toy
I got a new toy in the mail today! A Holga plastic lens adapted to my Nikon DSLR… I only had time for a few shots where I stopped for coffee but it looks very intersting. I did need to read the guide to attach it but other than that it’s easy. I have to use the M-setting or it says there is no lense. I can change the apature but not the F-stop. Focus is a choice of four different settings on the lens.
Always think of Stephen Kng when I see the elephant from this angle – it scares the shit out of me.
As I’ve read it you are recommended to only shoot with the DSLR-adapted Holga lens where there is a lot of light but I kinda like this look. I did make the image a bit brighter in Lightroom but not a lot.
